This tour is the combination of the Irazu Volcano National Park and the Orosi Lankester Garden tours. To that end the tour offers the mystique of the Irazu Volcano, and the enchantment of the lush gardens in Orosi.
The tour will begin with us trekking south along the Panamerican Highway until we reach the base of the behemoth “Iztaru” (a name of an indigenous village that was situated on the flanks of the volcano, and a likely candidate as a possible origin for the current name of the Irazu Volcano).
The winding road traverses fertile lands in which all types and forms of vegetation are cultivated, all the while affording us a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. And, at the very top of the summit, on a clear day, one can be privy to an unforgettable bird’s eye view of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
As we descend to the city of Cartago we will stop at the Virgin of the Angels Basilica - a famous peregrination site for many believers, some of which travel for days or even weeks on foot, in a pilgrimage of faith, to the site. The Basilica has large vaulted ceilings and exquisite examples of stained glass windows, and is a must see.
Next, after we visit the Basilica we will stop at the Lankester Gardens, a University of Costa Rica Center for investigation that protects more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and countless species of other plants.
Then, we will continue to the Valley of Orosi, an area that overflows with unparallel beauty. We will be able to visit one of the few remaining colonial churches and we will stop to enjoy a scrumptious typical lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Tortuguero is considered the most important place in the western Caribbean for the Green Turtle nesting. The green turtle nesting is one of the most interesting natural phenomena. The process is considered the most critical period in the biological cycle of the turtle since the females have to go to the beaches in large quantities and during more or less fixed times.
Tortuguero National Park is the best place in Costa Rica to encounter wildlife; it consists of a large system of waterways irrigating the majority of the Northern Caribbean area of the country.
Because of its remote location and difficult access this pristine Rainforest remains virtually untouched and it is home to many animals like sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, trogons, water birds, colourful frogs and butterflies.
On the first day we will drive to the Caño Blanco embarking area where we will access the main canal to go north into the National Park. Upon arrival in our hotel we will enjoy a delicious lunch followed by a visit to the unique Tortuguero village.
This National Park is also the prime nesting site for the green and leatherback sea turtles from June to October, during which months an optional turtle nesting night- tour will be available.
These concentrations and the difficulty of travel on the sand, make these species very vulnerable to man and other predators. That is the reason why the Tortuguero National Park is interested in the protection of these marine species. There is no doubt this is an experience that you should not miss when visiting the Tortuguero area during the months of july through late September or early
On the second day we will embark on a boat trip into the jungle where you will explore the lagoons and hidden canals; as we go deeper into the forest the canals become smaller and the surrounding wildlife gets closer. On the way out we will take part of a guided hike in the south side of the park, where away from the water the trees are very tall, covered with bromeliads, vines and orchids for a great complement to the canal experience.
Back at Caño Blanco we will drive out with the option to be drooped off in San José, Caribe Sur or the Arenal Volcano.
In the 3 days / 2 nights package, an extra day in this wonderful area will give you the opportunity to visit more remote places. As optional trips at an extra charge there are hikes to beautiful Cerro Tortuguero for amazing views of the area or a slow paced kayaking tour on the smaller canals.
If you are a big wildlife enthusiast or a bird watcher we highly recommend the three day stay! This option includes one extra night of lodging, another Canal tour, 3 more meals and extra time at leisure.
