This trip starts at the community of La Virgen de Sarapiquí, one of the most important in the area. The section runs through impressive rainforest which towers over the banks of the river, exhilarating sections of Class II-III whitewater, clear pools of water, and the trip takes place amongst a wide range of flora and fauna. The section is excellent for people who want to participate in rafting for the first time and want exciting and challenging rapids with whitewater, as well for people with previous experience in rafting.

To run this section, the minimum recommended age is 10 years of age, and for older adults it is important to consider physical condition and previous experience. We do not recommend the participation of adults older than 60 without previous experience. The whole section (La Virgen - Chilamate) is 7 miles (11 kms) long and normally takes about 2 ½ hours. It includes a brief stop with a fruit buffet and time to swim. Flowing freely from two of Costa Rica's volcanic national parks and running alongside primary rainforest, the Sarapiquí is one of the most pristine and cleanest rivers in Costa Rica. Access to the river is very easy and a good paved road runs safely nearby, although not visible from the river.

Located in the mountains in the north central area of Costa Rica. Breezy and cold, The village of  Monteverde was founded in 1951 by Quakers from the United States who wished to leave behind a constant fear of war as well as an obligation to support continued militarism through paying U.S. taxes. They chose Costa Rica primarily because it had no standing army.

Although Monteverde's founders came here to farm the land, they wisely recognized the need to preserve the rare cloud  forest that covered the mountain slopes above their fields, and to that end they dedicated the largest adjacent tract of cloud forest as the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Preserve. Today, Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Perched on a high mountain ridge, this tiny, scattered village and surrounding cloud forest are well known both among scientific researchers and ecotravelers.
