Day 2             SAN JOSE - MONTEVERDE

Located in the mountains in the north central area of Costa Rica. Breezy and cold, the village of Monteverde was founded in 1951 by Quakers from the United States who wished to leave behind a constant fear of war as well as an obligation to support continued militarism through paying U.S. taxes. They chose Costa Rica primarily because it had no standing army. Although Monteverde's founders came here to farm the land, they wisely recognized the need to preserve the rare cloud forest that covered the mountain slopes above their fields, and to that end they dedicated the largest adjacent tract of cloud forest as the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Preserve.

Today, Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Perched on a high mountain ridge, this tiny, scattered village and surrounding cloud forest are well known both among scientific researchers and ecotravelers.

Day 3            SELVATURA PARK

After Breakfast you will be picked up to take to Selvatura Park that is a conservation project located in Monteverde, a location famous for its cloud forest. Selvatura is a project that has been developed under rigorous engineering supervision to provide the best safety, security and quality possible in all our activities. The Canopy Tour is one of the safest adventures in Costa Rica. Our Canopy Tour guides will start by dressing you with the appropriate equipment; then they will take your through each of the 15 cables and 18 platforms and optionally through our very own Tarzan Swing.

Treetop Walkways is a 1.9 mile (approximately 3 kilometer ) trail that crosses through the cloud forest, in which our visitors will walk through eight different bridges from various lengths ranging between 150 feet ( 50 meters ) up to 510 feet ( 170 meters ) and altitudes ranging between 36 feet ( 12 meters ) up to 180 feet ( 60 meters ). Each of the bridges feature a five foot width, the widest ones in the country, and also a capacity of up to 80 people per bridge making them both the longest and strongest bridge system in Costa Rica. The treetop walkways are suitable for people of all ages and physical condition. The Butterfly Garden is like exploring a different world. A world in which a controlled climate provides the best temperature of 82.4º F (28º C) for its inhabitants to survive.

 Day 4

During the morning driving to La Fortuna where the Arenal Volcano is located, one of the most popular volcanoes of the country. On the way to Arenal, you will pass by small picturesque towns and you will enjoy of beautiful landscapes.

The summit of the Arenal Volcano, rising 1,633 meters above sea level and continuously active since 1968, towers far above the northern plains overlooking a wind-swept lake and pristine cloud forests reserves. An incredibly diverse population of wildlife awaits you in this part of Costa Rica.

Driving along winding roads, you climb higher into the surrounding mountains, where temperatures drop to a refreshing 70-75 degrees F. Off in the distance one can see the dark green and blue silhouettes of the Guanacaste and Tilaran mountain ranges. The ideal way to visit this region is by car. The landscapes as you drive along twisting roads make for incredible photographs. Of the 850 bird species identified in Costa Rica, 600 are permanent residents in their region. Don't forget the binoculars!!

The weather in this particular region tends to characterize itself with warm daytime temperatures (low to mid 80's) and relatively high humidity. There are intermittent rain showers that usually pass quickly. From late February to early May, the rain lessens in frequency which allows for fantastic skyscapes during sunrise and sunset.

Paradise on earth? Many say Manuel Antonio is one of the prettiest beaches in the world, and the large numbers of tourist who arrive every year tend to agree. With several stunning beaches backed by craggy, lush mountainsides, nature's creation reaches perfection in Manuel Antonio. Once can spend days exploring its abundant beaches and kilometers of nature trails, accumulating a profound appreciation for the area's riches and an understanding of how important it is to conserve these places.

The third beach in the park is the nicest, with excellent swimming and snorkeling. Plan ahead, as the park is closed Mondays. Get there early as they restrict the amount of people who can enter in order to conserve the park's delicate ecosystem.

Manuel Antonio National Park is also one of the most popular ones due to its lovely forest-backed tropical beaches, impressive rocky headlands with ocean and island views, and vibrant wildlife. A well-maintained trail network allows visitors to witness the unspoiled primary forest that grows along the high tide mark. Over 350 species of birds are reported in the park and surrounded area,

and a variety of lizards, snakes, iguanas, monkeys, sloths, butterflies and other animals might be observed.
